What Is Couples Counselling?

Couples counselling, sometimes called couple counselling or marriage counselling, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help partners resolve conflict and reconnect emotionally. Your counsellor remains neutral throughout. Their role is not to decide who is right, but to help both of you understand the patterns underneath the disagreements and find a different way through them.

Most couples wait far longer than they need to. The Gottman Institute reports that partners live with distress for an average of six years before seeking help. Yet the evidence for acting sooner is strong. A 2022 review published in Family Process found that the average person receiving couple therapy ends up better off than 70 to 80 per cent of those who receive no treatment.

At our Glasgow practice, qualified counsellors offer relationship counselling in person in Glasgow and through online sessions across the UK. We have evening appointments for couples balancing work and family responsibilities.

How Relationship Counselling Can Help

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit, and no relationship difficulties are too small to discuss. Some couples come to us during a difficult time to resolve specific differences; others because something has quietly shifted and neither partner can name it. Counselling for couples can help you address:

anxiety-1

Communication breakdown

OCD

Rebuilding trust

depression

Loss of intimacy

Bereavement Grief

Life transitions

panic

Built-up resentment

anger

Deciding your future

self-esteem

Constant arguments

chronic-pain

Feeling like flatmates

phobia

Jealousy and insecurity

The first few sessions of the counselling process typically involve exploring your relationship history and agreeing on shared goals, so the work has a clear focus from the start. Where wider family difficulties are part of the picture, our family counselling in Glasgow can run alongside or instead of couples work.

Real Stories. Real Support.

Tracey made me feel so at ease. She has a very calming voice and after even my first session I was feeling that little bit better. By the last session, I was pretty gutted because I had started to look forward to the hour and picking apart my thoughts and feelings from the past week. This is the sign of a very good counsellor. Thank you ☺️

FAQs About Couples Counselling in Glasgow

Starting therapy as a pair raises questions that individual therapy does not. Here are the ones new clients ask most.

You can still begin on your own. Individual sessions can help you:

  • Understand your part in the relationship dynamics
  • Make positive changes to how you communicate
  • Decide what you need.

A change in one partner’s behaviour often shifts the pattern between both. Many reluctant partners also join later, once they see that there is hope and that counselling is not about blame. If it would help, your first free consultation can explore how to raise the subject at home.

Working through relationship issues often takes less time than people expect. Relate, the UK’s largest relationship support charity, notes that between six and twelve sessions is usual, depending on your situation.  At The Talking Rooms, couples typically commit to six sessions to start, each lasting around 50 to 90 minutes, and review progress with their counsellor as they go. You can get more details on our pricing page.

Yes. Couples counselling is helpful beyond saving a relationship. For some couples, the work is about taking shared responsibility for deciding whether to stay together honestly rather than through years of slow drift.

In other cases, it is about separating with respect, particularly where children are involved. A neutral counsellor helps both partners hear each other’s perspective clearly, whatever the outcome, so the decision is made with understanding rather than resentment.
