Accessing Therapy in Glasgow
Glasgow is one of the most resilient, warm, and fiercely proud cities in the UK. It is also a city where people tend to get on with things, often for longer than they should, before asking for help. You carry what you are carrying, you keep going, and somewhere along the way, the weight of it starts to feel ordinary.
Researchers in psychology have studied what is known as the Glasgow Effect for decades: the pattern of health challenges in the city that lasts even in areas of comparable wealth to other UK cities. Research suggests that accumulated psycho-emotional stress, the one that builds quietly across a lifetime and rarely gets addressed directly, may be a catalyst for these patterns.

Mental Health in Glasgow
According to the Scottish Health Survey 2024, adults in Scotland’s most financially stretched communities are almost six times as vulnerable to experiencing symptoms of depression. Glasgow has more of those deprived communities than any other city in Scotland, at 45.44%. Research from the Glasgow Centre for Population Health also found that suicide and drug-related mental health disorders account for part of the city’s higher premature mortality rate compared to areas with similar deprivation profiles.
Those are statistics about a city. Behind each one is a person who, at some point, decided they deserved support. Mental health difficulties do not follow neat lines, and people seek counselling in Glasgow from every part of the city and every walk of life. If you are here, you are probably at that point too. Reaching out is not always easy, but taking that step is one of the most important decisions you can make for yourself.

Glasgow Counselling: What We Help With
People come to therapy sessions at very different points. Our experienced counsellors focus on helping you discover the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. They help you develop practical tools to respond to them differently. If you are looking for something less prescriptive, our integrative counselling gives you space to lead the process and explore your issues and well-being at your own pace. CBT therapy for adults follows a structured, evidence-based model recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment for:

Anxiety and panic

Low mood

Trauma and PTSD

Grief and loss

Stress and burnout

Low self-esteem

OCD

Social anxiety

Self-harm
We also offer CBT therapy for teenagers from the age of 12, with sessions adapted to be age-appropriate to help make changes in behaviour and improve mood.
Real Stories. Real Support.
Tracey made me feel so at ease. She has a very calming voice and after even my first session I was feeling that little bit better. By the last session, I was pretty gutted because I had started to look forward to the hour and picking apart my thoughts and feelings from the past week. This is the sign of a very good counsellor. Thank you ☺️

FAQs About Therapy in Glasgow
Starting psychotherapy is a big step, and it is natural to have questions.
Here are some of the most common questions people ask before getting in touch with our practice.
Yes, absolutely. We offer evening appointments by video call or telephone, so you do not need to take time off work. Around half of our clients choose online therapy, and many find that being in a familiar environment actually helps them open up more easily. Our sessions follow the same professional structure as in-person sessions, and your counsellor will build trust by checking in regularly to make sure the format is working well for you.
Most people are not sure, and that is completely understandable. Cognitive behavioural therapy suits people who want a structured approach with clear techniques for managing thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Psychotherapy in Glasgow tends to suit people who want to explore deeper patterns and understand the roots of how they feel.
Integrative counselling sits somewhere between the two, drawing on multiple approaches depending on what is most useful for your well-being. Your counsellor will guide you through this openly, and the approach adapts as your personal growth and individual needs develop over time.
The process begins with a free 15-minute telephone consultation, a genuinely informal call where you can share a little about what is going on, and we can talk through your situation and explore the solutions that feel right for you. If you decide to go ahead, an initial £50 assessment session gives you and your counsellor the chance to understand your personal goals and agree on a plan. There is no obligation to commit to anything upfront, so that you can come with an open mind.
If You Are in Crisis
The Talking Rooms is a scheduled therapy service and is not classified as a crisis service. Please note we operate Monday to Friday 9 am-5 pm.
