Lifting the Fog: Gentle Ways to Improve Low Mood This September
4th September 2025Slow Down to Catch Up: Reconnecting to What Matters Before the Season ShiftsBy Nicola Ball, Therapist & Mental Wellness Expert
August is a strange month, isn’t it? The days are still long, but there’s a quiet shift in the air. Holiday plans begin winding down, school uniforms start appearing in shop windows, and that familiar pull toward routine — and overwhelm — starts creeping in.
It’s the pause before the push. The moment to breathe before the busyness of autumn kicks off. And if we’re not careful, we rush right past it.
That’s why August is the perfect time to reconnect — to yourself, your people, your values, your purpose.
Reconnection Isn’t a Luxury — It’s a Lifeline
When life gets busy, connection is often the first thing to go. We go into autopilot: ticking off lists, meeting deadlines, showing up for everyone else. We say things like “I just need to get through this week,” but that week turns into months.
Then, one day we realise: we don’t feel like ourselves anymore.
We feel: – Disconnected from joy – Detached from our bodies – Unfulfilled in relationships – Out of sync with our own values
And yet, we keep going. Because that’s what we do.
But this month, I want to invite you to stop. To slow down. And to catch up — not with your to-do list, but with yourself.
Four Pathways to Reconnection
Here are four areas to gently explore this August. Start with the one that calls to you most:
1. Reconnect to Yourself
When was the last time you checked in with you? Not the roles you play. Not the goals you chase. Just the human underneath it all.
Try this: – Sit somewhere quiet. Hand on heart. Deep breath in. – Ask: “What do I need today?” – Then honour it, even in a small way.
Your needs are not inconveniences. They’re clues. They’re the roadmap back to you.
2. Reconnect to Your People
Not just the ones you live with. The ones who see you. The ones who laugh with you, ground you, and remind you who you are.
This isn’t about planning big catch-ups (though do if you can!). It’s about intentional presence.
Try this: – Send a voice note to someone you miss. – Eat dinner with your phone in another room. – Ask a loved one: “What’s been on your mind lately?” — and really listen.
Connection doesn’t require perfection. Just presence.
3. Reconnect to Your Purpose
Purpose doesn’t have to be a grand mission. It’s that feeling of alignment when you do something that lights you up or feels true to your values.
In the rush of life, that purpose can get buried. But it never disappears.
Try this: – Reflect: “When do I feel most like myself?” – Follow that feeling. Even if just for 10 minutes.
4. Reconnect to What’s Next (With Intention)
August is the bridge between the freedom of summer and the structure of autumn. Instead of dreading the transition — use it.
Try this: – Ask: “How do I want to feel in September?” – Choose one action now that helps you get there.
It might be setting a boundary. Booking something restorative. Letting go of something that’s no longer serving you.
Final Thought
Reconnection doesn’t need to be a grand gesture. It can be as simple as a walk without your phone. A five-minute journal check-in. A quiet moment of honesty with yourself.
So this August, don’t race to catch up with the world. Catch up with yourself. Because when you’re rooted in connection — everything else becomes clearer.
And you, just as you are, are worth reconnecting with.
