What some organisations do not realise is just how difficult it can be to put your hand up and say that you are not ok. That you need support. We have been programmed to feel shame, to feel weak and to just get on with it our whole lives. Just for clarity that programming is wrong. We are human beings, not human doings. We build resilience all throughout our lives, but we all have a ceiling. A capacity if you like for what a human can handle.
We forget that sometimes. We forget, and sometimes are guilty of not knowing what’s going on for someone outside the workplace. A person under immense professional stress may also be facing difficulties at home. Could be a sick parent, a child, a relationship breakdown, chronic illness and the list goes on.
I remember coming across a lady who had never taken a sick day off work, but she looked incredibly unwell to me. I asked her a little about her life. She’s lost her son after being attacked in the street, he’d been in a coma for months and she had to switch off his life support. Not a single person, including her boss knew anything about this. I always think about that lady when I was designing this program. I wanted to create a support system for employees that is accessible without having to talk to your line manager or even HR but also gives your employer a wider sense of the issues that must be addressed to ensure they have a healthy, happy and for productive workforce.
